Trapping is an effective way of controlling mink. Live capture using a cage trap is the most appropriate method because it avoids the risk of harming non-target species when shooting. It is easy and humane and allows the easy release of non-target species such as the water vole.

Larsen traps is used to catch all corvid pest species (i.e. crows, magpies, jackdaws, jays, rooks), and their particular value is in catching crows and magpies when they set up their breeding territories. The Larsen trap has a separate compartment for a ‘decoy’ bird, which is then seen as an intruder in any corvid area in which the trap is placed.

This trap requires no baiting and the run through design allows the mink to enter the tunnel trap during its normal behaviour during the hunt for food. The mink simply walks onto the central plate that triggers both doors to then spring shut.

Prop the trap up with a wooden stick or a full bottle tied with string, leaving enough string so you can hide a few feet away and hold the end of it. Bait the trap with plenty of food just in case cats you don’t want to trap wander in before your target.
